The Property Council of Australia today welcomed the Albanese Government’s move to increase Australia’s permanent migration cap from 160,000 to 195,000 as well as its decision to invest more resources in visa processing.
Property Council Chief Executive Ken Morrison said with the country facing a shortfall of half a million skilled workers, the announcement from the government of a permanent lift to the migration cap is a significant step in alleviating the skills crisis.
“As companies struggle to fill job openings across the country, returning to normal levels of migration is desperately important in powering our economy,” Mr Morrison said.
“Population growth is one of the nation’s big economic engines, so it is pleasing to see the government lift the migration cap and invest resources in dealing with visa backlogs to help build a stronger pipeline of skilled workers.
“No other short-term project has the potential to be so effective in addressing the skills crisis in the short term,” he said.
