Property Council welcomes inclusion of South Creek on Infrastructure Priority List

The Property Council of Australia has welcomed this week’s announcement by Infrastructure Australia to include the integrated land use and water cycle management for the South Creek catchment on their Infrastructure Priority List.

The South Creek catchment sits at the center of Sydney’s Western Parkland City and spans the local government areas of Hawkesbury, Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool, Fairfield and Camden.

“Water management around South Creek is central to the future development of Western Sydney,” the Property Council of Australia’s Western Sydney Regional Director Ross Grove said today.

“With the Western Parkland City set to house 1.6 million residents by 2056, and with summer temperatures being among the hottest already, water retention and the promotion of an expansive tree canopy are issues that go hand in hand.

“From Windsor to Werrington to Gregory Hills, South Creek is the central pillar to managing stormwater, addressing urban heat and retaining water and the government is right to list its management as a key priority for the future.

“A range of options exist improve to water retention, including the roll-out of a purple pipe network across to redistribute recycled water to parks and gardens.

“The shifting weather events over Summer underscores an expectation from the community that we build resilient and adaptable cities that are responsive to the challenges of their surrounding environment.

“As the city grows, it is more than possible to see a positive improvement in the health of South Creek. The property industry is pioneering a range of measures across Western Sydney and we look forward to working with the NSW Government on their next steps.”

Following the inclusion of the South Creek initiative on the Infrastructure Priority List, the NSW Government is to prepare a business case as part of Stage 3 of Infrastructure Australia’s Assessment Framework.

14 Western Sydney projects are already on the Infrastructure Priority List, including the Western Sydney Airport, connecting road and rail links, freight rail and intermodal access.
