Victorian Freight Plan a good start, now investment the key

The Property Council of Australia has welcomed the Victorian Government’s release of its Freight Plan, but called for funding to match the priorities.

Victorian Acting Executive Director, Matthew Kandelaars, endorsed the key priority areas, particularly the establishment of Freight Victoria, protecting key freight corridors and ensuring appropriate buffers between residential and commercial areas.

“Our lives depend on an efficient freight and logistics network. The food, clothes, cars, building materials and devices we enjoy every day are delivered to us through the freight supply chain.

“With our population growing each year, we need a freight plan to move people and goods around our city and suburbs efficiently and safely,” said Mr Kandelaars.

Victoria is well placed to be the nation’s leader in freight and logistics. With good infrastructure, industrial land supply and an efficient port, Victoria’s $21 billion freight industry needs smart, strategic planning.

The Property Council cautioned that without appropriate funding to match the plan, other cities could attract investment away from Victoria in a highly competitive sector.

“The Government and Opposition must commit to funding key freight infrastructure projects such as the Western Interstate Freight Terminal and a second port at Bay West, to prevent this strategy becoming just another report on a shelf, said Mr Kandelaars.”
