The Property Council WA has welcomed today’s announcement appointing Anthony Kannis as Director-General of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH).

Executive Director Sandra Brewer, Property Council WA, said Mr Kannis is a highly respected and qualified appointment, well equipped to lead the Department through the Phase II Planning Reform program.

“We congratulate Mr Kannis on his appointment as Director-General of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage and looks forward to continuing to work with him to drive better planning outcomes for Western Australia.

“In his time leading METRONET, the Property Council worked closely with Mr Kannis to champion the development of transit-oriented METRONET precincts.

“In recent years, there has been a significant increase in construction and planning activity in Western Australia. Strong leadership will support DPLH to continue its reform agenda, improve processes and ensure adequate resourcing to keep pace with demand.

“The WA planning system is at the heart of good development. Major planning reforms that streamline the planning system, set a clear vision for our current and future communities and reduce the cost  of development will be vital to ensuring WA remains an affordable, vibrant and dynamic place to live.”

“Recent innovation in the planning system, such as the creation of the State Development Assessment Unit (SDAU), present several advantages and chances to streamline the planning system. Mr Kannis has the opportunity to capture the best features of this system and retain them in future planning models.”
