The Property Council of Australia has welcomed the public endorsement from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to move multicultural broadcaster SBS to Western Sydney.
Property Council’s Western Sydney Director Ross Grove said relocating SBS to Western Sydney made sense on a multitude of levels.
“Western Sydney sits at the heart of multicultural Australia. We are the destination of choice for new migration and a focal point for Australia’s humanitarian intake. We are the home of both the SBS audience, and the SBS story – it is fitting that we should be the home of their headquarters too,” Mr Grove said.
“Our region is home to a number of great sites to accommodate the SBS relocation from Parramatta’s cutting edge office market to the emerging centre of Liverpool.
“An SBS relocation could also prove quite transformative for the centres of Auburn, Fairfield and Bankstown.
“An SBS relocation represents an enormous opportunity to support Western Sydney’s transformation at the local level, while also getting the message out that this is an exciting place with great people and a positive story to tell.”
Mr Grove said the time was now for Western Sydney to receive new media resources.
“This relocation would see enormous benefits to the Western Sydney economy along with its social and cultural development,” he said
“Where there is less access to media you have more untold stories and less voices heard which creates unnecessary barriers to participation in public debate.
“Almost all of our state’s media outlets are all situated in the eastern part of the city so it is wise to rebalance some of those resources toward where the population is.
“With an ABC already in Western Sydney this move would create an opportunity for a media precinct and a diverse range of broadcasting.”
