Property Council ACT Secures Leaders’ Debate Ahead of Crucial Election

The Property Council of Australia will host a debate between ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Opposition Leader Elizabeth Lee on 16 October 2024, three days before the Territory election.

Property Council Interim ACT Executive Director, Gino Luglietti, said the debate would offer voters a rare opportunity to engage directly with the key Leaders shaping the Territory’s future.

“This debate will cut through the rhetoric and give each Leader the chance to set out their plans for tackling one of the most critical issues we face in the ACT – housing supply and affordability.

“Our population is set to boom, and the next four years will be crucial for Canberra’s development. All the cards will be on the table just three days out from the election, making this a must attend event.”

In addition to housing, the debate will cover a wide range of topics crucial to ensuring sustainable growth for Tomorrow’s Canberra’s including:

  • Planning reform to accommodate growth while maintaining the City’s character
  • Tax reform and its impact on businesses and residents
  • Infrastructure development to support an expanding population
  • Initiatives to attract and retain businesses in the ACT

“This isn’t just another political showdown—it’s a rare chance to scrutinise fully-formed policy platforms and challenge our potential Leaders on their vision for the ACT,” Mr Luglietti said.

“Each Leader’s vision for making sure Canberra has the homes, lifestyle and facilities needed to support an expanding population and a thriving economy will be in the spotlight,” he said.

The Property Council this week released its Election Platform, calling for all parties to commit to a five-point plan for housing, balanced taxation, vibrancy and nightlife, sustainability, and infrastructure.

“The debate puts our Election Platform front and centre, making sure those looking to lead the next Government are held accountable for delivering what Tomorrow’s Canberra needs,” Mr Luglietti said.
