Property ACT’s second biggest non-government employer
The ACT’s property industry continues to provide a backbone of jobs and economic activity outside of government, according to new analysis by AEC Group released today.
Creating jobs for almost 18,600 people in the ACT, property is the biggest employing industry after government and health. Nationally, property has overtaken health care and social assistance as the biggest direct contributor to employment in Australia by industry, creating more than 1.4 million jobs. The property industry directly contributed $3.2 billion to the ACT’s GTP in 2015-16.
The industry contributed approximately $900.9 million to ACT Government tax revenues in 2015-16, 57.5% of the total collected and up more than $189 million on 2013-14.
ACT Executive Director Adina Cirson said the new research shows how vital the industry is to creating jobs and communities. The release of the AEC Research analysing employment and economic activity by industry sector also marks the launch of a community-facing campaign by the Property Council working with our members to tell the compelling job creation story of our industry. Creating for Generations highlights the scope of the property industry, encompassing everything from residential to retirement, retail to office and industrial, and its role as Australia’s biggest generator of jobs and economic activity.
