NT service centre project competes at national property awards

A government project that provides better service centres in remote locations across the Northern Territory has been nominated for a prestigious national property award.

The Remote Service Centres Program is a finalist among 128 announced ahead of the 2020 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards.

The awards program, now in its 38th year in partnership with RLB, showcases innovative projects, pioneering solutions and inspiring leadership in Australia’s property industry.

The project, led by Australian Government’s Department of Human Services and JLL, is competing for the Gough Recruitment Award for Government Leadership.

“The new service centre on Groote Eylandt illustrates the complexity and challenge of this project,” says the Property Council’s Executive Director in the Northern Territory, Ruth Palmer.

“Spanning more than 4,000 kilometres of land and sea, the new service centre was constructed in a factory in Adelaide before six building modules were trucked to Darwin and barged to the remote Groote Eylandt community.

“Working to a tight budget and timeframe, the service centre was delivered in an impressive 13 weeks.

“The result is not just a better office environment for workers. This project also illustrates how the built environment instils a sense of pride in community.”

The Department is now looking at a larger rollout as part of its commitment to improve services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The property industry is Australia’s largest, employing 1.4 million people and generating $202 billion, or
13 per cent, of the nation’s GDP.

“This is the third year running that the Top End has finalists competing with the best of the best developments around the country – and we should all be proud of this example of local leadership,” says RLB Director Paul Lassemillante.

“RLB has proudly co-hosted these awards since 1982. Over the last 38 years, the awards have become an important platform to recognise and reward the people and companies building great cities and communities,” Mr Lassemillante concludes.

National award winners will be announced at the 2020 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards Gala Dinner, to be held at the ICC Sydney Convention Centre on Friday 15 May 2020. Tickets are now on sale.
