NSW leads the way with more sustainable homes

The Property Council of Australia has applauded the NSW Government for its commitment to sustainability, with new nation-leading residential energy efficiency standards set to come into effect over this weekend.

From 1 October 2023, changes to the state’s Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) will see NSW families be the first in the country to benefit from more energy efficient homes.

Property Council NSW Executive Director Katie Stevenson said NSW was set to become the first state in the nation to benefit from new minimum energy efficiency standards.

“With other states set to transition in 2024, this is putting NSW ahead of the pack in creating a more sustainable future,” Ms Stevenson said.

“Improving energy performance through the introduction of minimum 7-Star NatHERS rating will deliver significant benefits for families right across the state.

“Higher energy standards mean lower household energy bills, reduced emissions and healthier and more comfortable homes.

“These new standards also mean new homes in NSW will be more resilient to extreme weather and better suited to changes in climate.”

Ms Stevenson noted that the new minimum standards would assist in providing certainty to industry.

“Without a focus on energy efficiency, we have no hope of meeting our Paris Climate targets, and this will help deliver a higher standard of homes along the way,” she said.
