New masterplan for Canberra Brickworks ticks all the boxesThe revised plan for the Old Canberra Brickworks at Yarralumla will improve density along a major transport corridor, provide more housing choice and create a vibrant new heritage destination, says the Property Council of Australia.According to the Property Council’s ACT Executive Director, Catherine Carter, the revised masterplan “ticks all the boxes” in terms of urban density and infill, mixed-use development and investment in Canberra’s heritage.”We are very supportive of the new plan, which will be a unique destination for Canberrans and visitors, and will also provide additional housing for our growing city.”This development has the potential to enhance the urban fabric of Canberra – and we applaud the ACT Government for investing more than $5 million on conservation and adaptation of the Brickworks. This will breathe new life into a largely forgotten part of our city’s history, and provide a new tourist destination and social hub.”The Property Council is keen to review details around the revised traffic management plan, as significant pressure will be experienced around the Yarralumla shops, but we welcome the prioritisation of a six-lane interchange bridging Yarra Glen Road, the Mint Interchange.”We also note the ACT Government is very stretched at the moment, currently development projects across the city on multiple development fronts. However, we applaud the government’s ambitious agenda for urban renewal, which will drive economic growth, provide employment opportunities and create exciting new places for people.”This investment in heritage is money well spent, and will deliver economic and social dividends for Canberrans now and well into the future,” Ms Carter concludes.Media contact: Catherine Carter, ACT Executive Director, 02 6248 6902 or 0412 330 079
