New City Stadium Proposal a Game Changer for Canberra’s CBD
The Property Council of Australia today welcomed the Canberra Liberals’ proposal to develop a new 30,000-seat stadium at the Acton Waterfront, saying the initiative aligned with its Election Platform calls for action to revitalise the city centre and boost the local economy.
Property Council ACT Executive Director Ashlee Berry said a city-based stadium could be a transformative project for the City and surrounding businesses – it will boost vibrancy, the economy and create jobs.
“The Property Council has consistently called for a world-class, multi-purpose stadium that brings life and economic vibrancy back to Canberra’s CBD – this proposal is an exciting step forward,” Ms Berry said.
“The location at Acton Waterfront, surrounded by hotels, restaurants, and bars, could provide a home for our elite sporting teams and attract international events, concerts, and entertainment that put Canberra more firmly on the map.”
“Our Election Platform advocates for infrastructure that supports the city’s night-time economy, tourism, and retail, and a stadium of this calibre is a critical piece of that vision,” Ms Berry said.
The Property Council’s Platform also calls for the stadium to be supported by light rail and public transport to ensure seamless access, as well as strategic connections to the city’s cultural and business districts.
“We need infrastructure that draws people back into the heart of Canberra—this project could do exactly that. Now we call on other parties to follow suit and commit to this vital project for Canberra’s future,” Ms Berry said.
“Canberra deserves a stadium that can host major sporting events but also world-class entertainment, and we’re excited to see and contribute to this vision taking shape,” she said.
