Local Government Planning Under the Lens for Second Time

The Property Council WA is proud to announce a second Benchmarking Greater Local Government Report is to be released in early 2018.

The report is a follow up of an earlier report released in 2016, that ranked each metropolitan local governments based on its planning performance.

” This second report offers a great opportunity for those councils who have improved their planning performance to receive some well-deserved recognition, while highlighting where more work needs to be done,” Property Council WA Executive Director Lino Iacomella said.

” The Property Council was responsive to all feedback from participating local governments following the first report and as a result, this new report will look at not only local government performance but will highlight the interdependence between local and State Government and agencies and will demonstrate how this process can be improved.

“The 2016 report stated: ” A number of local governments would have recorded a better performance in the survey if their draft local planning strategies and schemes were being processed by the WAPC and Department of Planning in a timely manner.”

Questionnaires will be sent to all metropolitan Council CEOs in the next week and will report on the following:

  • Strategic planning
  • Statutory planning
  • Delegation of planning approvals to professionals for determination
  • Timeliness of processing planning applications; and
  • Performance reporting

“The 2018 report will provide an opportunity to showcase the progress and improvements made by local governments since the first report and will provide the perfect opportunity to highlight the interdependence of the planning system and the role of State Government and agencies in the planning process and where vital improvements can be made,” Mr Iacomella said.
