Labor to Govern the Territory
We congratulate Michael Gunner and Territory Labor on their election into Government, said Ruth Palmer, Northern Territory Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia.
“The newly elect Chief Minister committed in his victory speech to being open and accountable to the community.
“The Property Council of Australia has a significant and positive agenda for the transformation of our cities and we look forward to taking Michael Gunner up on his offer of being accountable to the interests of the community and business and working with industry.
“We need to improve conditions and confidence of the property sector. We need smart policy in place to ensure the Territory grows effectively over the long term, not just over a 4 year term of government.
“We support stopping the removal of government employees from our CBD and would welcome the opportunity to work with the Labor Government in developing policy to increase activity and the lowering of existing commercial vacancy rates in our capital city.
“Seeing the projects in the Darwin City Centre Master Plan implemented will boost confidence in the CBD and encourage investment.
“We have long advocated the need for a CBD master plan and we strongly support this commitment. We need to start these critical projects now and we need to get it right, we need a well performing city centre to ensure our economy continues to grow.
“We would expect to start seeing Barneson Boulevard come into fruition with the Labor government committing to a $6 million injection along with the funding from the Federal Government and City of Darwin. The boulevard project will improve access to the city and improve the overall performance of the city.
“We have long advocated the need for more tourism related facilities in the CBD and welcome the commitment from the Labor government to deliver a new Territory Museum. Increasing tourism related amenities will help to improve business conditions in our CBD.
“Integrating the Waterfront and the CBD needs to happen and we support the Labor Governments plan to link the Waterfront through to Cullen Bay.
“The business community needs to see stability from our government in order for confidence to improve.”
