Industry welcomes partnership to unlock Metro West growth
The Property Council of Australia has applauded the NSW Government on its commitment to progressing an unsolicited proposal from the Australian Turf Club to deliver an additional station at Rosehill as part of the Sydney Metro West project.
“Unsolicited proposals take a degree of determination and vision on the part of both government and the private sector, so it is pleasing to see the Metro proceeding with additional investments being made in Western Sydney,” the Property Council’s Western Sydney Regional Director Ross Grove said today.
“A decision to put more stations closer to Parramatta is a win for Western Sydney and reflects the role of Parramatta as a centre in its own right. It takes the long-view of the city’s growth and appreciates that decisions about this sort of infrastructure will shape the city for the next hundred years.
“Greater Parramatta has been a leader in the delivery of new housing supply and this decision backs in this future with the infrastructure we need to thrive as a city. To achieve the ambitions of industry for the ‘30 minute city’ we need to turn unlock the latent capacity of counter-peak flows across all of our transport networks, and this call is a step in the right direction.
“The Property Council has a long track record of advocating for a stronger Parramatta focus on Sydney Metro West. We called for more stations throughout the project approval stage, and we reaffirmed this call while the new government was considering how it would proceed.
“We also note that the government has flagged the development of a ‘value capture mechanism’ to fund community infrastructure around each metro stop. Liveability outcomes will be important for these new precincts and we will look at any funding mechanisms with an open mind, provided that the measures are economically feasible. We’re also looking forward to working with the government on how a second station can contribute to strong economic outcomes for our city.
“Now is not the time to take the foot off the pedal on the need for housing supply along this corridor. While this new station is a gamechanger, the Metro unlocks opportunity across multiple precincts and the only way to get the housing we need is to deliver the boldest possible pre-planning at each locality for the wave of growth that we know is going to come.”
