Industry Welcomes Ministry Focus on Housing and Infrastructure

The Property Council of Australia has welcomed the housing and infrastructure focus of the new ACT Ministry announced today, saying it demonstrated a renewed commitment to deliver the infrastructure, housing, and planning reforms needed for Tomorrow’s Canberra.

Property Council ACT & Capital Region Regional Director Ashlee Berry said that the expanded focus on infrastructure delivery and housing supply was timely and critical.

“The creation of Infrastructure Canberra, overseen by Chief Minister Andrew Barr, signals a strong commitment to delivering the large-scale projects and local upgrades our city needs.

“We look forward to working closely with Infrastructure Canberra to make sure major projects are delivered in line with the needs and ambitions of Tomorrow’s Canberra,” she said.

Ms Berry said the property industry was encouraged by the Government’s pledge to boost housing supply, including 30,000 new homes by 2030.

“Housing supply is the number one priority for the ACT, and we’re ready to work with new Minister Yvette Berry in her role overseeing Homes and New Suburbs and make these targets a reality.

“The scale of demand for new homes means we need to be laser-focused on removing any roadblocks to delivery,” Ms Berry said.

Ms Berry said the appointment of Chris Steel as Treasurer with responsibility for planning reform offered a welcome opportunity to address the planning hurdles holding back housing delivery.

“The industry will be pleased to see Minister Steel continue in this role, and we look forward to working with him to advance the reforms needed to ensure a well-planned and affordable housing market.

“A strong planning system will be essential to meeting targets, jobs, and economic growth.”

“We also see a tremendous opportunity to improve coordination between planning and transport, which will be essential for delivering connected communities and transport solutions that work for all Canberrans,” Ms Berry said.

“Our Election Platform flagged the need for a balanced approach to planning and investment that supports new housing, better infrastructure, and a thriving economy. We’re ready to partner now with the new Ministry to bring those priorities to life,” she said.
