Housing Supply Action Plan applauded
The Property Council of Australia has applauded Brisbane City Council’s leadership in adopting a suite of incentives to supercharge the delivery of new homes.
Property Council Queensland Executive Director Jen Williams said Council’s Housing Supply Action Plan will help to lower the cost of delivering new homes and stimulate new supply across the city.
“There is no denying that Queensland is in the grips of a housing crisis, and the only way out of the crisis is to build more homes, sooner,” explained Ms Williams.
“However, it has never been harder or more expensive to deliver new homes in Queensland. This is reflected in the drop off in number of new dwellings approved, under construction or completed in recent years.
“An alarming number of projects have been placed ‘on-hold’ indefinitely, as the cost of delivery has rendered countless housing proposals unfeasible.
“Coupled with costly planning and regulatory imposts, it is little wonder demand continues to outstrip supply.
“This welcome initiative from Brisbane City Council takes advantage of existing investment in infrastructure and will help reduce the cost of delivery for private sector and community housing providers.
“Since the pandemic, South East Queensland has seen a huge increase in interstate migration, with population projections showing little sign of this momentum slowing.
“Significant policy changes are needed to simplify and lower the cost of delivering new housing to ensure the crisis does not worsen.
“Infrastructure charges form a major component of the cost of delivery of new homes. This welcome reduction in input costs will go a long way to getting more homes on the ground, sooner,” Ms Williams said.
