Good for communities, good for jobs

The Property Council of Australia today welcomed the release of Tasmania’s Affordable Housing Strategy 2015-2025 and Action Plan 2015-2019.

Tasmanian Executive Director Brian Wightman said the plan was an important step forward for all Tasmanians.

“The Property Council is unequivocal in its advocacy to deliver jobs and strong communities; today’s announcement provides us with a pathway forward to deliver on our goals.

Mr. Wightman reiterated that job growth should be the focus of any proactive government and when combined with the right economic conditions, the private sector including members of the Property Council of Australia will deliver.

“This is an excellent example of government and the private sector working together to deliver a fairer and more equitable Tasmania through job creation and delivering homes for those who need it most.

“900 homes and 5 full-time equivalent jobs contributing to economic activity totaling $235 million is welcome news and builds on improving business and development conditions, much of which continues to be driven by the property sector,” he said.

The Property Sector directly contributed $2.0 billion to Gross State Product (GSP) in 2013-14 (7.8%), and is estimated to have contributed a further $2.7 billion to Tasmania’s GSP through flow-on demand for goods and services.

It also directly employed 13,923 full time equivalent (FTE) employees in 2013-14 (7.0 % of Tasmania’s total), and supported some 16,060 FTE jobs through flow-on activity.

Mr. Wightman acknowledged the immediate investment of $5 million to develop twenty new homes with up to 12 in the north of the state.

“We look forward to receiving further information regarding how we can progress the opportunities presented by today’s announcement.

“Tasmanians should feel confident that the private sector can deliver high quality, cost effective and much needed housing stock which will be of great benefit to communities,” he said.
