Giving Sydney the councils we need

Sydney is poised to enjoy modern councils with the release of the IPART report into local government, according to the Property Council.

“Sydney is on the cusp of getting a system of local government that matches our standing as a global city,” NSW Executive Director Glenn Byres said.

“The city’s growth trajectory demands councils with the scale to participate in good strategic planning, infrastructure investment and service delivery.

“Our industry submits over 70,000 development applications each year and pays over $5 billion in rates annually.

“We need local government to function well and partner on the creation of more homes, jobs, investment and stronger communities.

“Councils should now embrace the opportunity to reform themselves given the review of the sector has effectively run for four years now.

“Too many small councils in particular have refused to seize the lifeline thrown to them via the Government’s package of incentives.”
