Girls in Property opens a world of future job prospects

Today, the Property Council of Australia’s Girls in Property program will give up to 100 West Australian high school students, all teenage girls, an opportunity to learn about property careers and hear from talented and inspirational property professionals.

The Year 9 students, from Shenton College and John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School, will spend today finding out about WA’s property industry, why it is so important for social and economic development and why women are so important to the future of the industry.

The students start the day at Curtin University, interact with several senior executives who have forged a variety of career paths in the property sector, participate in brain storming workshops and tour the Construction Futures Centre and the recently completed Forrest Chase redevelopment in the city.

Property Council WA Executive Director Sandra Brewer said the property industry is WA’s biggest employer.

“Girls in Property highlights opportunities for the next generation of young women thinking about choosing a dynamic career,” Ms Brewer said.

“There are thousands of different kinds of jobs in property and we think many young people, particularly young women, don’t always get a chance to find out about the exciting career options in property.”

Ms Brewer said the property industry was committed to having a diverse workforce and creating a supportive environment for young women in the industry.

“Traditionally, we haven’t seen as many women as men in the industry. We think changing that benefits everybody,” Ms Brewer said. “Diversity is linked to outperformance and we want our industry exceeding high-performance benchmarks.”
