The Property Council welcomes the Minister for Planning’s release of the final version of the Central Geelong Framework Plan (CGFP) this morning.
The plan will serve as a critical document that will direct the future development of central Geelong in terms of residential, commercial, and mixed-use properties.
The Property Council in particular welcomes the more ambitious long-term housing and employment targets the final version of the CGFP includes. The plan aims to cater for a larger population of 16,000 residents by 2050, and nearly a million new square metres of commercial floor space to accommodate 60,000 jobs.
The CGFP has been implemented immediately through Amendment C431gee, which amends the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme. The final CGFP is based on four themes that address various aspects of central Geelong’s growth, providing a comprehensive and holistic approach to its development:
- A thriving economy and job creation, which supports the growth of retail, hospitality, arts and culture, creates diverse housing choices and strengthens the city’s visitation appeal;
- A connection to place, which recognises the distinct character of central Geelong’s different precincts and protects and celebrates its heritage;
- Getting around with ease, which includes enhancing the central city’s walkability and upgrading the Geelong Station precinct; and
- A vibrant city life, which enables accessible open space and social infrastructure to be provided, and encourages sustainable development.
