Free parking another win for the CBD

Home Media Releases Free parking another win for the CBD

The Property Council has welcomed the Lord Mayor’s support for CBD activation, in announcing that Brisbane’s parking meters will be turned off and fees would be halved at Council carparks throughout February.

Property Council Queensland Executive Director, Jen Williams, said that the announcement came at the perfect time and bolstered the growing momentum around Brisbane’s CBD.

“The Lord Mayor’s announcement removes another barrier for people looking to come into the city to shop, play or do business,” Ms Williams said.

“A month of free and cheap parking will not only entice more shoppers into the city, it will make it cheaper for office workers to come in throughout the week,” she added.

“Over the last month we have seen the State Government urge workers to return to the office, fees slashed for CBD businesses impacted by COVID-19, and now Council has added car parking incentives to the mix.

“Together these initiatives help build the support that our city centre businesses need after a challenging two years of stop-start activity.

“Despite another difficult start to the year due to the Omicron variant, there is growing momentum and confidence in Brisbane’s city centre.

“I am confident that these complimentary offers across different tiers of Government will deliver an uptick in foot traffic in the CBD and provide a template for a bi-partisan approach to CBD revitalisation.

“The private sector is eager to match the support of Government. Office managers are currently planning an array of offers, incentives, and activities to welcome people back to the city as part of our next CBD activation campaign.

“The Property Council looks forward to unveiling this campaign soon and is seeking support from both local and state government for the initiative,” Ms Williams said.
