Deon Moran wins Queensland Village Manager of the Year

With an arm sleeve tattoo and less than two years’ experience as a village manager, even the residents at Fraser Shores 1 retirement community in Hervey Bay admit Deon Moran “isn’t normal.”

But they are lightning-fast to clarify that if previous managers were normal, Mr Moran is the polar opposite and, in fact, the “best manager that we’ve had in Fraser Shores.”

That is how long-time resident Margaret Crump described Mr Moran in her nomination submission for the Programmed Award for Queensland Village Manager of the Year.

“I speak for many people when I say we strongly recommend (Mr Moran) for ‘Manager of the Year’, and I say once more: if all other managers were classed as being normal, then Deon Moran is NOT normal,” Mrs Crump said.

Mr Moran today outscored other nominees to win the Queensland Village Manager of the Year at the Property Council’s Retirement Living Forum in Brisbane.

Mr Moran said he was honoured to receive the prestigious award and be recognised for his efforts by the Retirement Living Council, Property Council, employer BlueCare Retirement Living, awards judges, and residents at Fraser Shores 1.

A lot of emotion, very humbling and again it’s not just about me, it’s a community and a team that deliver what we do every day,” Mr Moran said.

“It’s overwhelming and humbling, all the emotions.”

In his role with BlueCare, Mr Moran manages Fraser Shores 1 – a large resort-style community with 249 retirement living homes.

He has a background in sales, business, marketing, and strategy and previously worked for large organisations like Coca-Cola, Suntory, Channel 7, and NewsCorp, but moved into retirement living in early 2023 with a burning desire to make a difference at a not-for-profit organisation.

RLC Executive Director, Daniel Gannon, applauded Mr Moran on this industry recognition.

“It’s clear from testimonials that Deon Moran is an exceptional leader with strong problem-solving skills and a unique gift for understanding people and their needs,” Mr Gannon said.

“People like Deon Moran make a huge difference in the retirement living sector, and without a doubt, the residents at Fraser Shores 1 adore him and appreciate his efforts.”

Mr Moran – like all winners of regional awards over the coming months – will now go into the running to be crowned Australia’s Village Manager of the Year at the RLC’s National Retirement Living Summit in Brisbane in June this year.
