Council candidates must declare positionThe Property Council of Australia is calling on Local Government election candidates to declare whether they support a controversial speed limit reduction proposal. “When South Australians go to the polls in 25 days, they need to know whether their local candidates support cutting speed limits to 30km/h,” said SA Executive Director of the Property Council Daniel Gannon. “The Heart Foundation has today declared it wants speed limits cut to 30km/h on suburban streets to encourage more walking and cycling around Adelaide. “Furthermore, it wants a 40km/h restriction on busy roads that have high pedestrian and cycling traffic. “Instead of dramatically cutting speed limits to 30km/h, metropolitan Adelaide needs a network of cycling and walking paths. “The Property Council has long advocated the need for central city cycle paths as a means of redirecting cycling and walking traffic away from busy roads. “This would keep both safety and functionality in mind when looking for a genuine practical policy response. “Adelaide needs a strategic long-term plan for integrated movement into, through and out of the city. “Importantly, this plan must be adhered to moving forward. “South Australians would be rightly questioning whether their local Council candidates support such a controversial proposal – and they need to know before 7 November.”
