City of Perth Expansion Will Further Invigorate Our City

The Property Council welcomes the passing of the City of Perth Act.

“Perth has developed into a vibrant and forward thinking city that deserves to be recognized as our capital city,” Property Council Executive Director Joe Lenzo said.

“Perth is the heart of our state for business, tourism, retail and entertainment following major transformations including Elizabeth Quay, Perth Arena and the Perth City Link project.”

“It’s only natural that as our capital city the City of Perth boundaries will now include our biggest landmark in Kings Park as well as the new QEII Hospital, Perth Children’s Hospital and the state’s most prestigious university, UWA.”

“Last year’s failed Local Government reforms were a huge lost opportunity. It is encouraging to see this Government finally shown some vision and leadership on this issue by passing the City of Perth Act but more needs to be done.

“The Government needs to use the momentum from this and push forward with the reform process. This state needs larger and more sustainable councils that can provide the full range of services for businesses and communities under growth pressures.”

“Ultimately the role of local council is to provide ratepayers the best possible place to live, at the best rate; metropolitan municipality reform is the only way to achieve that.”

The act, which comes into effect as of July 1, will formally acknowledge Perth as WA’s capital city. It will also see the City of Perth take in land occupied by Kings Park, Queen Elizabeth II and Perth Children’s hospitals as well as UWA.

“There is no doubt the City of Perth will prove to be a shining example of the benefits of local council reform and we encourage other councils to rethink the missed opportunity on amalgamations.”
