Canberra can take art to the streets, says Property CouncilThe transformation of drab and dreary Tocumwal Lane off Bunda Street could be the start of a street art revolution, says the Property Council of Australia.”Canberra’s city centre needs a makeover. Street art can be a cheap and cheerful way to lift our city centre – something a number of local property owners are already embracing,” says the Property Council’s Executive Director ACT, Catherine Carter.”While Canberra CBD Limited’s recent commissioning in Tocumwal Lane is a great start, we need more local businesses to start investing in street art for their buildings.”In Phillip, artist Lisa Twomey was commissioned to paint a fabulous mural that references some of the business uses of the building during its 44 history – including a mechanic, patisserie and lighting shop.Over in Braddon, Hopscotch Bar features a mural created by 16-year-old street artist Solomon Grainger.”Street art can come in all shapes and forms – from mosaics and yarn bombs to guerilla gardens. Some of the most daring, provocative art can be found in the streets and sidewalks of the world’s cities – and street art can help us create a ‘cool capital’,” Ms Carter adds.”Let’s embrace exuberant expressions of creativity that brighten up our CBD, support local arts and culture and help us to create a city like no other,” Ms Carter concludes.Media contact:Catherine Carter |M 0412 330 079 |P 02 6248 6602 |E [email protected]
