Budget Investment in Newcastle Logistics Precinct A Smart Use of Strategic Industrial Land: Property Council
The Property Council of Australia today welcomed the NSW Government’s $115.5 million commitment in the 2025-26 Budget to deliver the Newcastle Logistics Precinct, saying it was a timely and strategic investment in high-value industrial land.
Located at the former BHP Steelworks Intertrade site, the precinct will support the storage and staging of large infrastructure components destined for major projects across NSW.
Property Council Hunter and Central Coast Regional Director Nuatali Nelmes said the land’s proximity to the Port of Newcastle and major freight corridors made it one of the most important industrial sites in the Hunter.
“This announcement sends a clear signal that the Government is committed to unlocking the economic potential of strategic industrial land in the region,” Ms Nelmes said.
“It’s a smart, job-generating use of well-located land that has sat idle for too long.
“Newcastle’s industrial land supply near the Port is limited and in high demand. Activating this precinct for logistics is the right move and will strengthen the Hunter’s position as an economic and freight hub.”
The Property Council said the new logistics precinct was important for energy infrastructure and for broader freight, defence, and advanced manufacturing industries that rely on reliable access to portside land.
“Putting this land to work will attract private investment, support long-term employment, and enhance Newcastle’s competitiveness across a range of sectors,” Ms Nelmes said
The redevelopment also presents an opportunity to integrate infrastructure planning, land use, and investment attraction across government and industry.
“We see this as a strong example of government partnering with industry to deliver the enabling infrastructure that underpins economic growth,” Ms Nelmes said.
