An authority with teeth needed to deliver on a vision for Sydney
An independent authority that can deliver on Sydney’s need for major projects, jobs and housing is essential, according to the Property Council of Australia.
The State Government has today flagged it will establish a commissioned charged with managing Sydney’s growth.
The Property Council first called for an independent authority to take charge of metropolitan-wide city planning in 2006 and has welcomed the potential move.
“We need to break down the barriers and bureaucratic inertia that have strangled Sydney’s growth,” NSW Executive Director Glenn Byres said.
“An independent commission with the capacity to bring state agencies and councils into line with a common vision for our city is a must.
“The property industry invests in our cities for the long-haul and wants to see Sydney succeed.
“But right now, no one takes charge and provides complete responsibility for managing growth in Australia’s only global city.
“Instead, we suffer from having an excessive number of councils who too often focus on small-minded concerns, rather than the big strategic decisions that need to be made.
“Any new authority needs the teeth to overcome impediments that act as a brake on the delivery of new infrastructure, jobs and housing.”
