A Launceston of the future should harness the opportunity provided by the University of Tasmania’s move to the Inveresk site.

The Tasmanian Division of the Property Council of Australia today threw its support behind the $200 million proposal which would revitalise a changing city.

Property Council Executive Director Brian Wightman encouraged Northern Tasmanians to suspend judgment and explore the potential that a development of this magnitude would deliver.

“Launceston should be known across the world as a university city.  With clean, safe affordable living this is the most significant economic stimulus that has been suggested for a very long time.”

Mr. Wightman encouraged locals to inform themselves of the proposal and to consider the Launceston that they would like to see in ten years time.

“If it’s a vibrant city where high quality offerings including education, manufacturing, hospitality and the arts, and the services required to support these industries abounds, then grasp this opportunity.

“Don’t simply say no – consider the potential, this is a time for bold and proactive decision making to set-up our city’s future,” Mr. Wightman said.

Tasmanian Division President Mr. Sam Hogg said that the move should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a loss for any particular community.

“A purpose built educational precinct will attract students from across the world.  University life has changed, students embrace technology and hot-desk, and the Newnham Campus will eventually fail to satisfy modern learners’ needs.

“Additional students will require additional housing and development, including inner city living and affordable accommodation which presents a significant opportunity for Northern Tasmanians,” Mr. Hogg said.

“This is an opportunity too good to be missed, if we do we will regret it for a generation,” Mr. Wightman concluded.
