A sensible debate on tax reform involves the GST

Premier Mike Baird’s declaration that all options should be on the table is the right approach to tax reform, according the Property Council.

His comments came after new research showed increasing or broadening the GST was a favoured approach to paying for the abolition of stamp duty.

“We need a mature debate around the best way to pay for abolition of stamp duty and Mike Baird’s leadership is welcomed,” NSW Executive Director Glenn Byres said.

“NSW understands stamp duty is an unfair and damaging tax that makes people’s mortgages larger and makes it harder for young people to buy their own homes.

“The GST is seen as a fairer tax because it is simple, can’t be dodged and people can control how much they pay by how much they spend.

“We hope other states follow the lead set by the NSW Premier Baird and take a constructive tone to tax reform.”
