NSW Executive Director of the Property Council Jane Fitzgerald today congratulated Macquarie Group Limited for winning the 2016 Rider Levett Bucknall NSW Development of the Year for reinvigoration of the historic heritage building at 50 Martin Place.
Ms Fitzgerald said the refurbishment of the iconic building was a spectacular addition to the Martin Place streetscape.
“The Property Council Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation & Excellence Awards is the pre-eminent property industry program in Australia,” Ms Fitzgerald said.
“The annual awards program recognises excellence in the built environment and heralds the achievements of the sector’s finest professionals and companies. 50 Martin Place is this year’s worthy recipient from a field of 30 superior developments across the state.”
Ms Fitzgerald said the nominated projects shared a common link – they were all projects that will have enduring social, environmental and economic benefits for the people of NSW.
Michael Silman, Head of Corporate Real Estate at Macquarie Group Limited said Macquarie was honoured to have received this distinguished award.
“The redevelopment of 50 Martin Place as Macquarie’s Global Head Office was a unique opportunity to integrate a contemporary performance designed workplace into one of Australia’s finest heritage buildings,” Mr Silman said.
“The project was a true collaboration between Macquarie as developer, owner and occupier, our architects JPW, builder Brookfield and our team of consultants. This award is a credit to the whole team.
“The development of Macquarie’s new global headquarters in Sydney posed a unique challenge – to preserve the heritage features of an historic building while reinvigorating it as a contemporary office space. “
Key features of 50 Martin Place include:
- a steel-framed glass dome and widened central atrium which allows natural light to filter to all levels of the building, creating an open work environment and a sense of connection between business groups,
- a staircase running through the atrium connecting the collaboration spaces, creating a community in the building and increasing opportunities for interaction, and
- two circular glass lifts which transport clients through the building, placing them at the heart of the business.
Ms Fitzgerald said the property industry is NSW’s biggest industry and second largest employer generating 11 per cent of the state’s economic activity.
