Women in Property helping women in need

At our 2018 Women in Property signature lunch, the Property Council joined forces with Iris Residential to donate $40,000 towards Mission Australia’s redevelopment of Nyarlu Duwa Women’s Refuge in Meekatharra.

We are delighted to report back this project has now been completed and Nyarlu Duwa – or Woman House in the local Wadjari dialect – is now open. The shelter provides a safe place for local women experiencing family violence or sustained periods of violent and abusive behaviour.

Local Indigenous groups, resources companies, donors and Emerge Associates worked together on the redevelopment. The refuge includes a new administrative area and a staff bathroom, as well as a common room, kitchenette and bedroom that can be used to accommodate more clients.

In opening the redeveloped facility last week, Mission Australia’s Midwest Gascoyne Area Manager Dr Paul Royce said: “the redevelopment will really impact our ability to provide high quality services to women and children at risk in this region and will allow us to connect them with essential assistance, support and safety particularly in times of crisis and increasing need.”

The Property Council congratulates all of those involved in this project, particularly our members Iris Residential and Emerge Associates, and is proud to contribute to such an important cause on behalf of our members. It demonstrates what the industry is capable of when we use our expertise to help those in need.

Our support for Mission Australia continues beyond this project. In the lead up to our annual Christmas Party on December 5, we are looking for members to donate prizes to be raffled off in support of Mission Australia. To find out more, please contact Kath Bailey.
