20 spectacular WA projects in the spotlight

Shopping centres, workplaces, affordable housing developments and master-planned communities are among the 20 finalists from Western Australia in the running for prestigious national property awards.

The 2016 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards celebrate leading practice within Australia’s property development and investment industries.

Joe Lenzo, the Property Council’s WA Executive Director, says the state’s development industry can be proud of its enduring commitment to innovation and excellence.

“The diverse range of commercial projects recognised this year is impressive – from Cloisters in Perth, which transformed an outdated retail arcade into a new workplace and shopping destination, to the new sustainable WorkZone office campus on the fringe of the CBD,” Mr Lenzo says.

“It’s also exciting to see two projects recognised for a commitment to affordable housing. ‘One on Aberdeen’ – half of which is affordable housing – has injected greater vibrancy to an under-activated part of the Perth CBD, while Whiteman Edge in Brabham is not only close to transport, education and recreation, it’s affordable too.

“We also have a battle of the shopping centres on our hands, with four contenders in the Yardi Award for Best Shopping Centre, including the impressive $108 million redevelopment of Ocean Keys Shopping Centre and the upgrade of Lakeside Joondalup, which created the largest shopping centre in the state.

“Western Australia also has more master-planned communities up for awards than any other state, reflecting our commitment to build the best places for our fast-growing population,” Mr Lenzo says.

All WA finalists are competing for the industry’s most coveted prize – the Property Council of Australia/ Rider Levett Bucknall Australian Development of the Year award.

Managing Director of Rider Levett Bucknall WA, Alastair McMichael, says that a total of 145 finalists across 18 categories will be vying for awards this year.

“We are proud to present these awards, which shine a spotlight on Australia’s largest industry – an industry that generates 1.1 million jobs, and contributes more to the national economy than the manufacturing and mining sectors combined,” Mr McMichael says.

Rider Levett Bucknall has partnered with the Property Council to present the awards program since 1982. National award winners will be announced at the 2016 Property Council of Australia/ Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards Gala Dinner in Sydney on Friday 3 June 2016.
