ICC Sydney applauded at national property awards
International Convention Centre Sydney has taken home two national honours at the 2018 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation & Excellence Awards.
ICC Sydney was presented with two plaudits – the Brain & Poulter Award for Best Tourism and Leisure Development and the Woods Bagot Award for Best Public Building – at a gala dinner this evening.
The awards were presented to the Darling Harbour Live consortium, which includes Capella Capital, Hostplus, First State Super, Lendlease, AEG Ogden and Spotless.
Part of the NSW Government’s plan to revitalise Darling Harbour, ICC Sydney is one of Australia’s largest convention facilities. The centre boasts more than 240,000 sqm of gross floor area, including Australia’s biggest ballroom.
“The judges were impressed not only with the scale of the project – the Exhibition Hall is one of the largest steel structures in Sydney – but also with the project team’s commitment to innovation and sustainability,” says the Property Council’s Chief Executive, Ken Morrison.
“One of the world’s greenest convention centres, ICC Sydney boasts a swag of green ratings, as well as a series of Australian firsts, including the nation’s first community-funded roof solar project.
“The project also revitalised public realm in Darling Harbour, including the much-loved Tumbalong Park. ICC Sydney’s clever design has freed up 15 per cent more space for the community,” Mr Morrison explains.
According to RLB Managing Director NSW, Matthew Harris, the project was completed on time and on budget in just under five years from the initial tender in 2012 to the opening in December 2016.
“In September 2017, ICC Sydney clocked its one millionth visitor and booked its 1,000th event. In an era where public investment undergoes well-deserved scrutiny, ICC Sydney shows what can be achieved with the right mix of public and private stakeholders who share a passion for excellence.”
RLB has partnered with the Property Council of Australia to present the Innovation & Excellence Awards program since its inception in 1982.
